UK SIGHTINGS - Mysterious big cats still grab the headlines

MYSTERIOUS animals strike a chord in our psyche and the Highlands has a rich tradition in such sightings. The newspapers last week featured the “beast of Embo”, sighted by sisters after 18 sheep had been killed.
It sent my mind whirring back to 1980 and the celebrated Cannich puma which generated the kind of tabloid frenzy nowadays generated by Jordan’s Hindenburg-like cleavage or Cheryl Cole’s latest lip gloss.
There had been mystery animal sightings in the North a long time previously. The Daily Express reported in 1927 that in rural Inverness-shire sheep and goats had been attacked by an animal a shepherd described as “like a leopard but without spots”. A strange description unless it was the first case of a leopard actually changing his spots. Like the guy telling his mate: “I’ve just spotted a leopard” and his pal replying: “Don’t be daft, they’re born with spots

AUSTRALIA SIGHTINGSS: Mystery big cats roaming 1930s Gippsland district

During the 1930s in Victoria’s Gippsland district, mystery beasts of the feline kind were said to be slinking and stalking through the thick undergrowth. Experienced bushmen were left shaking in their boots, kids were kept home from school by worried mothers, brave dogs bolted with their tails between their legs, and farmers were unwilling to venture outdoors without their rifles at their sides.
On 30 October 1933, the Gippsland Times reported that a “big fawn-coloured, cat-like beast” had been spotted roaming the Gippsland ranges for the past 12 months.
“The mystery of an unknown animal, said to have been seen in different parts of the Gippsland ranges during the past 12 months, has been deepened by a report made on Monday by a Trafalgar farmer. He says he has seen a big fawn-coloured, cat-like beast roaming in the rugged outback country of Gunyah. The farmer, Mr. George Siggins, and his two sons, all experienced bushmen, believe the animal is a lioness, or something like it.
“They will not now go unarmed into the virgin scrub near their farm, and Mr. Siggins is having a special steel trap built by a blacksmith,” the paper statedread more

AUSTRALIA - Tracks of the Big Cat

On the 29th of February,1997 the Macarthur Chronicle published a collection of local big cat sightings going back many years. In a recent case it was reported that a young teenaged girl named Emilly was chased by a panther [1] while riding her horse at the Sugarloaf Horse Centre [2], a place I know well. Throughout this article, I will refer to “panthers” as the original articles did, even though it is not a correct term.
The Sugarloaf Horse Centre is a 220 hectare (approximately 600 acre) heritage listed property on the outer fringe of Sydney. It contains a fresh water canal servicing Prospect reservoir and the ambitiously named Mt. Sugarloaf. The riding centre is one of the oldest continually operating farms in the district, in use since about 1835. It has been spared from the encroachment of the urban sprawl due to a large supply of natural gas and a rich coal seam being mined via Appin.
Could a big cat live here? There would be no shortage of food or fresh water. The land is rich with hares and rabbits, some wallabies, almost a hundred delicious horses, and a steady flow of tender young riders visiting every week. With shady streams, thick scrub, and a small forest of native trees you could imagine that a panther would be hard to find if it didn’t want to be found. In theory, they could hide in the undergrowth or up in trees and would only need to come out at night to hunt. In practice however, as quiet and stealthy as they are, they are not invisible, nor are they obsessively shy. When resting in trees, their long drooping tails would tend to give them away, assuming the spindly eucalypt limbs don’t snap under their weight. Few trees here look strong enough to support a 60kg feline. These are not ideal conditions. READ MORE

NZ FEATURE - Do Pumas and Black Panthers really roam our Countryside

Making national headlines would have been the last thing on the mind of truck driver Chad Stewart when he stopped to drop off stock at the Gallagher’s Canterbury property at Mayfield on Oct 3rd 2003. His attention was drawn to a large black animal sitting near the sheep yards. Puzzled, he sat and observed it for a few minutes before it eventually arose and ran up the hill behind, displaying an unusually long tail as it bounded off.
He realized then that this was no ordinary farm dog, but what to his amazement, looked just like a black panther!

UK SIGHTINGS - Sighting of mysterious black cat predator

A MONEYSLANE man says he has spotted the 'big cat' linked to a number of local animal attacks.
Nigel Hanna (pictured) was driving to work in Lisburn around 5.50am last Wednesday when he crossed the path of the animal. He claims he had a clear view of the feline predator on the Ringsend Road, Dromara.
“I could see something running into the hedge and I knew it wasn't a fox as I have seen plenty of them in my time," he said.

“To me it was bigger than a fox, I have never seen an animal like it before," he said. Recent sightings of the 'cat' have been reported in the Hillsborough and Dromara areas and most recently a report from a farm on the Lackan Road, Ballyroney.

Animals have been found mauled and a police spokeswoman said residents have claimed to have seen a big cat in the same area. She added: "These issues have now been brought to police attention and local officers are making inquiries.read more

-GB-Possible wild cat nr Crowborough

29th of august around midnight,a vehicle driving past Herons Gyll near Crowborough and 2 witnesses reported to this website seeing what they could only describe as a large wild cat closely resembling a Scottish wild cat. Much larger than a domestic of a tabby colour they described seeing a clubby tail with distinctive black stripes just like a Scottish wild cat however they could make out a white tip on the tail. I have been reliably informed by members of the Scottish wild cat society that numbers of these cats are dangerously dwindling to less than 300 and only in their heartlands of Scotland, this is due, in part, to breeding with domestic in origin cats and it is beyond the realms of possibility for A Scottish wild cat to be wandering around in Sussex but where have we heard that before?! Although it is entirely possible that the witnesses did see an over large domestic on the prowl the sighting is interesting as it`s in an area where exceedingly large wild/feral/cross-bred cats of all sorts of different shapes have been reported over a very long period of time.READ ON

US- Mystery cats: Still elusive after all these years

OAK HARBOR -- On a quiet morning this past May, a resident of a retirement center in Oak Harbor says she was looking out her window and saw it move. A cat. Not just any cat, but a very big cat that looked like a mountain lion or a cougar. Tan in color and moving fast across the fields. She wasn't the only one to see it, other residents and workers also saw the feline before it vanished.  The sighting was reported to police and soon thereafter, as a safety precaution, recess was cancelled at a nearby grade school. Traps were set by wildlife officials in hopes that they might catch it.
That was 4 months ago, but no tracks were ever found and no other traces of the big cat were ever discerned. That's how these "cat sightings" are. Fleeting.  It was the same story in Ottawa County, in the summer of 1990, where residents of the small village of Genoa were also shaken by reports of a big "black cat" that was seen "loping" across SR 163 just inside the village limits. A subsequent search turned up little.READ ON

-GB-Sussex folklore: The continuing mystery of big cat sightings

Ever since man first set foot in the wilds of what we now know as the county of Sussex, he has spoken of strange forms said to inhabit the woods. Menacing apparitions, monstrous manifestations and unusual animals.
Welcome to my new regular column on Sussex folklore. Sussex as a county is steeped in history, and with history come peculiar stories, some true, some half-hinted, some factual, and so I’ve decided into delve into a majority of these for your pleasure. I’m an author and folklorist who is of the opinion that we need mystery in our lives, and over the years, with the advancement of modern technology, we have relegated our beliefs and fears to the backs of our mind and become sceptical as to which sort of things could still hide in the darkest corners of our forests.
For this first episode I’d like to begin with a relatively modern Sussex-related mystery that many of us like to call ‘big cats.’ Certainly since the 1960s there have been numerous reports of unusually large cats roaming the wilds of the county.
Sceptics argue that such animals are probably misinterpretations of dogs, feral cats and foxes, but fail to look at the startling evidence which shows sheep and deer carcasses completely stripped of meat, huge paw-prints – bereft of a claw indentation – unlike a dog, piles of faeces measuring some six-inches in length and consisting of deer fur, scratch marks found high up in trees, and of course, those rather blurry photographs.READ ON
