NEW ZEALAND SIGHTINGS: Elusive 'panther' may be on the move

Mid-Canterbury's elusive black panther may have moved south.

Last week a delivery driver spotted what he described as a large cat-like animal feeding on road kill just outside the Fairlie township in the early hours of the morning.

The description was remarkably similar to reports in a number of sightings of the panther-like animal in Mid Canterbury roughly the size of a Labrador dog, with round head and a distinctive long tail.

Such sightings began trickling in 1992 when the animal was spotted at the Ashburton River mouth.

But the legend really took flight this century when Marcus Ewart and David Tutton reported seeing a large, black panther-like cat near Alford Forest; two years later the cat appeared again, this time witnessed by Peter and Toni May in the Ashburton Gorge.

A month later, in October 2003, truck driver Chad Stewart was startled by a huge black cat in the Mayfield foothills. The same month the cat appeared again, this time near the Fairton meat works.

Several sightings were reported in the Seafield and Pendarves areas in January 2004.

UK SIGHTINGS: Mystery after 'big cat' spotted near Trowbridge

Mystery after 'big cat' spotted near TrowbridgeA songwriter is appealing for witnesses after he spotted a mysterious big black cat near Trowbridge.
Mike Booth, of Marlborough, was travelling along the A361 towards Seend from a folk gig at the Village Pump, behind the Lamb pub, in Mortimer Street, Trowbridge, with two friends when he saw the large cat crossing the road ahead at about 11.45pm on Thursday.
He said: “I was sat in the back of the car just looking out the window while my friends, who are husband and wife, had been having a chat in the front.
“I saw a jet black cat that was about the size of a labrador, around four feet long with a long bushy tail.
“He had just crossed the road ahead of us and was on the right hand side of the road when we passed, but what surprised me was rather than running away he turned to face the car and the reflection of the light shone in his bright amber eyes.
“He was definitely a cat as he had the characteristics of a feline.read more

UK SIGHTINGS: Big cat sighting in Bricket Wood?

A READER has come forward with another big cat story after reports of a mysterious creature prowling the streets of St Albans on the Review's website.
The reader, known only as Matt, claims he saw a large black cat in Bricket Wood on Sunday.
The sighting came just days after the Review reported Elizabeth Parson's strange encounter with a mysterious creature in St Albans in December last year.
Mrs Parsons, from Chorleywood, claims she saw a panther-like cat dart in front of her as her husband drove her to work along Highfield Park Drive, and insisted she saw two more mysterious creatures skulking around hedges on the side of the road. read more

UK SIGHTINGS: Mystery cat sighting near Lockerbie

Samantha Garden was on her way to work in Lockerbie on Wednesday morning when she noticed the strange looking creature standing in the middle of the road near Hoddom Bridge.
The 22-year-old from Middleshaw claims it looked her straight in the eye before bounding off into nearby woods.
She said: Ive never seen anything like it before. After it disappeared, I thought to myself did I really just see that? It was about the size of a small deer or fox, brown in colour with white tufts of fluff at the top of its ears. It had what looked like a tigers tail, which flicked up at the end.
I'm going to report it to police just in case anyone else has spotted it and its on the loose in nearby woods. Samantha isnt the only person to have spotted big cats in the region. In January, Aaron Halliday and Nathan Crosbie spotted a big cat similar to a panther in a field near Dalbeattie.
And last year, three mysterious cat sightings were reported in the space of a month. Read more

UK SIGHTINGS: Weeklies' big cat search intensifies

As the “silly season” gets into full swing, readers of four Lincolnshire weekly papers are being kept up-to-date with the latest sightings of the infamous Wolds panther.
They are leading the search for hard evidence of the local “beast” that may – or may not – have been spotted.
The Skegness StandardLouth LeaderHorncastle News and Market Rasen Mail have all reported recent sightings of the mystery animal.
Now a ‘I’ve seen the beast’ hotline has been created to further encourage readers to report their own beastly tales.
The Standard has also offered a £100 reward for any genuine films or photographs of the creature that it publishes.
Several suggestions have been made as to what the elusive animal could be, notably a panther, puma or a “rare blue fox”.
One reader reported seeing a “big, black beast” with a “strong and disgusting” … “foul scent”. It was the second sighting by Hubert Caborn, who had previously encountered the animal three years ago.
Another reader, who wished to remain anonymous, claims to have been stalked by a puma, resulting in him having to lock himself in his dog’s pen.
Louth Leader reporter Jayne Elliot said: “We have had an incredible response, with people confidently phoning in reporting sightings from a couple of weeks ago to a couple of years ago.read more

NEWSLINK: Domestic cats are 95% tiger

The discovery was made by scientists who have been sequencing the genomes of several types of big cat in an effort to aid conservation efforts. Several species of endangered cats were examined as part of the project including the snow leopard of which there are only thought to be around 3,000 left in the wild. Researchers hope that by sequencing their genomes it will help them to better understand and measure biodiversity and to be able to better decide with animals should be paired in breeding programs. With so few of the animals left, research of this kind could prove critical in preventing the species from disappearing forever within the next few years...

NEWSLINK: New Jersey: Mystery of the decapitated cats

In a twisted mystery that has spooked a quiet Pemberton Township neighborhood, two black cats were decapitated, their intestines yanked out and wrapped around the animals' hind legs. Then they were carefully placed in the driveway of a North Lakeshore Drive home.

The woman who found them in her driveway is uneasy. She and her husband have lived in the house for 10 years without problems.

"This is a good neighborhood. We have good kids live here. I don't understand why anyone would do this to us. Really, I don't," said the woman, who asked that her name not be published.

"It was on Friday morning," she said. "I was going out to hang my Halloween flag, and I saw these black things in the driveway. I thought they might be raccoons. But I got closer, and I could see they were cat bodies, and they had no heads."

She called the police, who turned the case over to Burlington County SPCA Chief Richard Forberg. On Tuesday, Forberg led a team of armed investigators through the woodsy neighborhood along Mirror Lake, searching for the missing cat heads, and "possibly other remains of other animals." read more
