The Department of Natural Resources confirmed two cougar sightings on trail cameras this week — bringing the total number of sightings in 2014 to three. These, coupled with a handful of others in the past few years, have led experts to say that the cougar is likely back in Wisconsin for the first time since 1910.

In the wake of research suggesting that African lions faced the danger of extinction due to increased conflicts with humans and the loss of both habitat and prey, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has proposed listing the iconic big cats as a threatened species.
According to Darryl Fears of the Washington Post, the proposal would make the African Lion the last of the big cats to receive federal protection under the Endangered Species Act, and comes as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports that their population has decreased by 30 percent over the past two decades.
“The African lion – a symbol of majesty, courage and strength – faces serious threats to its long-term survival,” FWS director Dan Ashe said in a statement Monday. “Listing it as a threatened species will bring the full protections of U.S. law to lion conservation, allowing us to strengthen enforcement and monitoring of imports and international trade.”

Michael "Nick" Nichols tracked the pride of big cats for six months before capturing this stunning shot, which stretches all the way to the horizon and includes a dramatic African sky.
The great sense of depth is enhanced by the use of infrared, which cuts through the haze.
Supported from the outset by the BBC, it has grown into one of the world's foremost photo competitions.
Strong narrative
Judge Magdalena Herrera is director of photography at GEO France, as well as being a veteran of National Geographic France.
She said American Nichols' composition had all the elements of a perfect picture.
"It tells you about behaviour, about the photographic techniques today, and it shows you the relationship of the animal to its environment," she told BBC News.
"What is striking about Nick's picture is its narrative - it's not just a portrait; there's a whole story going on inside it. And the black and white gives it a feeling of reportage."
This story is of the females of the Vumbi pride in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park.
Female force
They are sleeping with their cubs in the late-afternoon sunshine, having just fought and driven off a couple of over inquisitive males.
Nichols caught the scene, which he calls The Last Great Picture, from on top of his vehicle.
He said the infrared transformed the light, turning "the moment into something primal, biblical almost".
Three of the females were killed a few months later when the pride ventured on to land beyond the park.

Conservationists are trying to raise $4 million to build a special freeway overpass for mountain lions in Los Angeles.
A population of the rare and secretive big cats live in the Santa Monica Mountains but are split in two by the city's busy 101 freeway.
There is a shortage of males and that has led to inbreeding on both sides of the road, with several males being killed as they try to make the dangerous crossing to breed.
Only one big cat - known by it's tracking name P12 - is known to have successfully negotiated the ever increasing traffic in recent years.
"He (P12) came from the north and had a lot of genetic material that was new," National Park Service wildlife ecologist Seth Riley told NPR. "Fortunately not only did he survive, but he then became a dominant breeding male.

Police in Union City searched for a mountain lion that was reportedly seen by a creek Saturday afternoon.
Officers had searched a trail by Alameda Creek behind Carr Way after a resident spotted the lion around 1:30 p.m., Union City police Sgt. Shansab said.
When officers arrived to the scene, two other residents were walking in the area and said they also saw the big cat, Shansab said.
Officers searched for the animal without success and cleared the scene about an hour later, according to police.

Canned lion hunting, or ‘captive’ hunting as the breeders and hunters refer to it, is a type of hunting where lions are bred specifically to be shot in confined areas. Despite widespread public outrage, killing predators under these circumstances continues unabated in South Africa, with over 700 captive-bred lions shot annually.
“I think if Australians knew more… then they would be rightly horrified…It’s not fair, it’s not humane, it’s not 21st century and on my watch, it’s not acceptable,” said Hunt.

According to the report from the Little Rock Police Department, a primate keeper heard the calls for help at the jaguar exhibit and ran over to help. She said she saw the yellow jaguar (Agave) with its mouth around the little boy's neck.
Police say the father of the child told them he was leaning over the rail trying to get a picture of the animals and out of his peripheral vision saw the child's feet go over the rail. The father ran for help.
The little boy reportedly fell approximately 15 to 16 feet. The father said the black cat (Cactus Jack) bit the child on the foot and Agave bit into the clothing near the boy's neck. The father told police he picked up a water hose spool and threw it at the cats. The spool hit the cats and caused them to let go of the boy. The father said the Cactus Jack moved away from the child, but Agave circled back and bit the boy on the back of his neck. The father said he threw a camera bag at the cat, hitting it and causing it to let go of the boy. At that point, zoo staff arrived and kept the cats at bay with fire extinguishers so the child could be rescued.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The large male cougar that rattled nerves when it spent much of a day behind a hedge in a Mountain View neighborhood earlier this year was struck and killed by a car on a San Francisco Bay Area freeway.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday that the mountain lion was hit Oct. 3 on Interstate 280 near Redwood City. The car's driver was not hurt.
Paul Houghtaling, field project manager for the Santa Cruz Puma Project, identified the animal as the same big cat that spent about nine hours on a busy street in Mountain View in May.
After that incident the cougar was tranquilized and released into nearby hills.
Houghtaling says the accident occurred within a mile of the spot where a young female mountain lion was hit and killed a few months ago.

Another Jefferson County resident, Dusty Massie, has reported that he saw a jet-black large predator cat on a Jefferson County road about six weeks ago.
Massie, a Port Townsend painting contractor, believes he saw a large black cat about six weeks ago, or four weeks earlier than the sighting turned in by Forrest Aldrich last week. Massie said he saw the cat near Port Ludlow; Aldrich saw it near Point Hudson in downtown Port Townsend.
But Massie added a twist to the story.
He said he is certain it was a panther, not a dark-colored cougar.
Here’s Massie’s report of what he saw when driving out of Port Ludlow on Oak Bay Road toward its intersection with Beaver Valley Road, (SR 19).
“I saw that cat as well, except it's not a cougar, it's a panther!” he wrote. “I know how crazy that sounds, but I'm telling you that I was close enough to it to see the color of its eyes – yellow.”

The body of an adult mountain lion discovered in north-central Nebraska was the first female found outside the traditional cougar range in the western part of the state, according to state wildlife officials.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reported that the cougar's body was found along a road near Ericson, in Wheeler County, on Thursday. The big cat may have been hit by a vehicle, the commission said.
The cougar's gender is significant, because it could mean the establishment of a breeding population of the big cats in east-central Nebraska.
The only female mountain lions previously identified in Nebraska have been well west of Ericson, in the Pine Ridge, Wildcat Hills and the central Niobrara River valley near Valentine, said Sam Wilson, the commission's carnivore program manager.
Until last week, cougars found outside the western range have been young males driven out of their home territory by older males and in search of compatible territory and a mate. They often travel along rivers and streams unnoticed for long distances.

A mysterious big cat dubbed the ‘Huttock Top Beast’ when it was first spotted in Bacup may have resurfaced.
There have been numerous sightings of the puma-type animal across Rossendale over the last few years.
Dog walker Stewart Lord saw what he described as a ‘big cat the size of an Alsatian’ stood on a drystone wall about 100 yards from him near Greenbooth reservoir in Norden, Rochdale.
Mr Lord, of Norden, said: “I am 110 per cent sure of what it was.
“It was a browny grey colour, its hind quarters were slightly higher than the front and it had a long, thick tail, at least three quarters of the length of its body that curled down underneath.”
Mr Lord and his wife Pat were walking their staffie on a country lane off Edenfield Road, behind Nutters restaurant, at about 2pm on a Sunday afternoon when the sighting occurred.

For those who missed that story, a man got a visit from the wild animal at around 3 a.m. last Wednesday. It hopped onto his car and set off the alarm. According to the Los Angeles Times, the big cat most likely made its way into the neighborhood from nearby Almaden County Quicksilver Park.
The owner of the car, David Tang, made the surveillance video public to warn others in the area to “pay attention to the wildlife situation.”
Yeah, that’s the understatement of the year.

Asiatic lions in the wild generally have good tooth health so when a group of doctors undertook a survey including medicals of lions in the Gir region of India they were surprised to see tooth decay. They also found minor bone deformities and officials are now looking into whether the water provided is contaminated with fluoride.
Two doctors, Dr Jalpan Rupara and Dr Purvesh Kacha., produced a report, Ecology of Lions in Greater Gir Landscape, that highlighted that both lions and humans appeared to be suffering from fluorosis. The study area was Lathi Liliya which has a lion population of about 40 lions.
Eight lions were examined and three were found to be suffering from tooth decay and some lions were also suffering from mild bone deformities. One lion that was examined only had 2 of its 26 teeth still remaining. A second lion had lost 4 teeth and a third lion had lost 3 teeth.

Gerald Police Chief Steve Goodwin said his department was alerted to the sighting of a mountain lion just north of the city limits.
He said a motorist reported seeing the big cat around 5:40 a.m. Tuesday morning. The mountain lion crossed Highway Y in front of his vehicle and then stood at the roadside as he drove by.

When Geoff and Ruth Gulson sat down to lunch and glanced out over their bushland property in the NSW Southern Tablelands town of Goulburn on Sunday, they thought there was a large dog tied up to a tree.
But then the animal began to move around and the couple immediately knew it was too big for a dog.
The Gulson's couldn't believe their eyes: the lithe, black animal began to move in a feline, stalking manner.

There have been several more mountain lion sightings in the Turlock and Denair area Wednesday and Thursday, including one at Emanuel Medical Center.
At least two of the reports are confirmed sightings and in one case a paw print was found in the area, the Turlock Police Department reported.
It is unknown if it is more than one mountain lion that has been roaming in the area for several weeks now.
“Unless there is a distinct track pattern, like having a missing toe, then we just don’t know how many there could be,” said Lt. Patrick Foy of California Fish and Wildlife.

Fife has been revealed as a big cat hotspot after Courier Country sightings were laid bare by police.
Rumours of big cats in Fife have existed for years, ranging from Rathillet in the north to Saline in the south, as well as the Lomond Hills.
The figures include a dog walker reporting seeing a big dark coloured cat several times over the past two or three years in Glenrothes.
The data was revealed following a freedom of information request for details of big cat sightings in Courier Country since 2012.
Numerous sightings of big cats have been reported over the years, most notably in 2006 when Fife Constabulary believed they had found the first conclusive proof of a big cat known locally as the “Beast of Balbirnie.”
Officers produced a cast of a paw print which experts said might have been from an 18-month-old big cat, but sceptics argued it could have been from a large dog.
Since then, there have been various sightings including at Letham, Bishop Hill, between Glenrothes and Kinross and the Blairadam area of Kelty.
In 2012 a caller in Dunmore, Falkirk, saw a large cat - described as bigger than an alsation dog - while two large cats were seen by an officer in Tillicoultry in Clackmannanshire which were possibly lynx.
A deer carcass was also found destroyed in Rowardennan, Ben Lomond, in 2012. Police reported the caller thought another animal had been in the area and may be dangerous

animal was described as pure black in colour with a stocky build and yellow
eyes. The animal appeared to be about two-and-a-half feet tall.
