Australian Sightings

LIKE creatures caught in the light, the stories emerge, beautifully poised, then disappear. So it was with the lions.
Unpacking groceries one morning in Kalkarindji, Tracie Patrick pauses to remark: “I nearly didn’t come to see you mob today, I was that scared of the lion.” Lion? “My sister in Yuendumu told me about it. They’re all locked up in their houses, too afraid to go out.”
A big cat roaming the desert? Mouth to mouth, community to community, news travels inexorably through the bush. The remote world that can seem threateningly empty is to locals replete with gossip and intrigue. Want to know who’s up, down, rich, poor, sick, well? Ask the bush telegraph.
