UK SIGHTINGS - Big cat sighting claim at Aberporth

A large black 'panther-like' creature has been spotted in woodland near Aberporth.
Local resident Jane Bowling was walking her labrador dog in the Gilwen valley when she spotted the animal which she claims was twice as big as her pet.
“I had just reached this gate near an old quarry when I turned round and I saw this large cat emerging from the bushes to my left,” she said.
“It then ran across the field about 50-70 yards away from where I stood. I didn't actually see it clear the fence on the other side but it was way too big to have gone under it. I just couldn't believe my eyes.”
Mrs Bowling later told landowner Rhys Evans what she had seen.
Mr Evans, who keeps sheep on the field, said: "“Jane came round- read more

SHELTON, Wash.--If you're a big cat without a home, where can you go? The Wild Felid Advocacy Center in Shelton, Washington is the perfect place.
"She wouldn't have made it on her own at all in the wild." Shelleen Matthews said about a cougar named Hannah.
Shelleen and her husband Mark took the cougar in after Hannah's mother got killed by a car in Eastern Washington.
Hannah is one of 39 cats they care for. They have everything from a leopard, bobcats, lynx and more. It's the state's only non-profit big cat sanctuary.
"They're just really special. And they need a place to go," said Shelleen.
They're not looking to adopt them out. This is where they will live out their days.
It's a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day a week job that the Matthews dedicate their lives to. And, they are willing to give up their lives, too, if need be.
"We're not oblivious to what can happen," Shelleen said with a Bobcat in a perch over her shoulder.
"Anybody that does what we do would tell you, if something really bad happened to them because of the cats, it's fine."
But, she's glad they can do something good for cats who otherwise might never find a home.TO SEE VIDEO LINK

NEWSLINK-Bring back the big cats: is it time to start rewilding Britain?

The lynx may be brought back to Britain and areas of damaged landscape could be repaired. Photo: Ruggero Maramotti/Gallery Stock
One of the few surviving accounts by the Britons of what the Anglo-Saxons did to them is Y Gododdin. It tells the story of what may have been the last stand in England of the Gododdin – the tribes of the Hen Ogledd, or Old North – in 598AD. A force of 300 warriors – the British version of the defenders of Thermopylae – took on a far greater army of Angles at a town named in Brittonic as Catraeth, which was probably Catterick in North Yorkshire. Like the Spartan 300, they fought for three days, during which all but four were killed.
The Anglo-Saxon conquest appears to have crushed the preceding cultures much more decisively than the later suppression of the Anglo-Saxons by the Normans. One indication is the remarkable paucity of Brittonic words in the English language. Even if you accept the most generous derivations, there appear to be no more than a couple of dozen, of which only four are used in daily conversation: dad, gob, beak and basket. It was an obliteration almost as complete as that of the Native American cultures in the United States.
Y Gododdin was written by one of the four survivors of the battle, the poet Aneirin. He tells how the last warriors of the Gododdin gathered in Din Eidyn, the town we now call Edinburgh. (Several Scottish cities, including Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee, have Welsh – or, more precisely, Cumbric – names.) They feasted there for a year before marching south, towards certain death in Catraeth. In the middle of Aneirin’s gory saga is something incongruous: a sad and beautiful lullaby called “Pais Dinogad” (Dinogad’s Smock), in which a mother tells her son of his dead father’s mastery of hunting. It names the animals he killed. Most were easy for scholars to-READ MORE

US SIGHTINGS: THAT’S A BIG OL’ CAT!

Published 12:00am Thursday, August 7, 2014

0807_bigcat1069Jerry Newton said he was thinking about the approaching bow season when he checked the cards in his motion-triggered game camera this week. When he checked the images, he saw the usual critters – deer, raccoon, turkey, what appeared to be a fox, and a final one that he described as “a damned big ol’ kitty cat.”...

The cameras are behind his house in Oakey Ridge, south of Sanford, and the card was in the camera from July 7 until Aug. 4. Newton believes that “big ol’ kitty cat” is a cougar or a mountain lion, and set out to find someone to take a look.

NEWSLINK: New York’s big cat handling ban awaits Governor Cuomo's signature

No law currently exists in New York that prevents big cats kept in private exhibits from direct contact with humans. Their handlers often forget that these big cats are wild, and many have caused serious injuries to humans, not to mention the negative welfare implications for the cats. New York State is on the verge of enacting a law that will prohibit direct contact between people and big cats—a practice that is dangerous to both the public and the animals. Afterpassing both houses of the New York State legislature earlier this year, A.9004/S.6903 was sent to Governor Cuomo on Friday.

By signing this important measure into law, the Governor will send a powerful message to New Yorkers and to the country as a whole: it is time to place the safety and welfare of many before the profits of a few by bringing an end to big cat handling.

New York law already prohibits the possession of big cats as pets but, like most states, does not yet preclude exhibitors from allowing customers to interact with these dangerous animals without any protective barrier to prevent the animals from harming them. Big cat exhibitors assure visitors that the animals, though large, are harmless and well-suited to contact with humans.

NEWSLINK: WWF mistakenly radio-collars same big cat

 |
big catKATHMANDU, Nepal– With a technical team spread by the government and its development partners ´mistakenly´ fitting a satellite-based tracking device on the same  big cat, all the efforts spent in the radio-collaring of a snow leopard late last year in Kanchanjunga Conservation Area (KCA) located in the eastern region of Nepal have gone in vain.
In November last year, a team of technicians from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Reserve (DNPWC), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) had trapped a big cat in KCA. The trapped leopard was fitted with a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) collar and released in Khambache of Kanchanjunga area.
After five months, the DNPWC, the WWF and the NTNC spread a technical team again in KCA. The team, led by the WWF´s senior research officer Kamal Thapa, was assigned with trapping and fitting a GPS collar on a new snow leopard. Unfortunately, Thapa´s team trammeled the same big cat and released it after fitting a new GPS collar on it.

US SIGHTINGS: Mystery Of Black Cat Grows In Coweta

After a large, black cat-like animal attacked and carried away a Coweta County couple’s pet dog earlier this month, a number of Cowetans have also reported seeing a similar animal in the county.
Josephine Young, the owner of Max, who is thought to have died in the attack, described the animal as a large cat with a long tail. She estimated it was about five or six feet long, but only around two or three feet high. She is certain it was not a coyote, and its coat was shiny and black. Young lives on Timberland Trail off Smokey Road south of Newnan.
Young is not the only person in Coweta County who has seen an animal like this, though.
Annie Joe Berkowitz, who lives in the area of Coweta’s B.T. Brown Reservoir north of the Madras area, said she also had a near-close encounter with a large black animal in April.

NEWSLINK: Save the tiger: Good intentions are not enough... we need data

Tigers are one of the most graceful, beautiful and majestic animals on Earth. Our living planet has many wonders, which many of us cherish. Without always realising it, people depend on the tiger and the role it plays in helping to maintain a healthy, balanced ecosystem in those areas where it lives. Without tigers, deer and wild boar populations would boom, meaning that forests would not fully regenerate – they eat a lot of vegetation, as we have seen with deer in Scotland and sheep in Wales. Vegetation composition would change and this would affect many other species. The forests are important for people as well as wildlife, who depend on them for food, fuel, water resources and other non-timber forest products such as fruit and nuts. The forests provide livelihood opportunities and are of cultural and spiritual importance to communities. For sure, our world would be a poorer place without wild tigers.

NEWSLINK: Foresters Setting Trap Scared Away by Big Cat

CHENNAI: The elusive leopard, which has been terrorizing villages from  Vandalur to Chengalpattu, was heard on Sunday morning in the dense jungle near Thiruvadisoolam by two forest department officials who had gone there to set a trap for the big cat.
Officials said a forest guard and a watcher from the Chengalpattu range, along with a television reporter, had gone to the area around 8 am to place some meat in one of the cages set in the jungle. As they neared the camouflaged trap, the trio stopped dead in their tracks on hearing the leopard’s loud roar.
Though the animal could not be seen anywhere around, forest officials realized that it had spotted them. The men took to their heels and reached the village area around two km away. The spot where the men heard the leopard’s roar is only around two km from the Vallam Reserve Forest where the big cat was captured on camera in July.

Lahore: An Indian tiger which crossed into a Pakistani village has been captured by wildlife authorities after it injured two local people and triggered panic among the villagers.

The big cat entered the Kot Maanal village, some 150 kilometers from the Sialkot boundary, yesterday and attacked?men and cattle, Punjab Wildlife Department officials said.

"We have captured the big cat and transported it to the Lahore Zoo," the officials said.

Two local residents also suffered injures and were later shifted to a hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger.

The predator was caught after some residents informed police and the wildlife department about its presence in the village.

The incident spread panic in the border village with announcements being made from mosques for the villagers to remain in their houses.

Earlier in January, the wildlife officials had captured an Indian leopard from Pasrur border village, some 80 kilometers from here.

A Placerville woman out for a hike Monday instead wound up in a dangerous dance with a stalking mountain lion, according to San Miguel County Sheriff's Office reports.
Kyra Kopenstonksy was hiking the Coltrains Trail Monday afternoon, when she spotted the big cat and noticed it kept following her.

A friend she called in turn called 911, bringing Sheriff Bill Masters and six deputies out; two deputies later met up with her at the trailhead.
Kopenstonsky told them she was stalked for about 20 minutes. She used a tree branch to make herself look larger, then began singing to try to scare off the mountain lion.
It laid down and began grooming, but whenever she tried to back away, the cat would jump forward and crouch, according to the SMCSO. The cycle repeated itself a number of times, during which the lion would appear to wander off — but when she started stepping back again, the cat came at her from the side.

Big cat sighting prompts claim there is a 'very real possibility' they are breeding

A TEENAGER'S snaps of what appears to be a big cat have prompted claims the animals might be breeding and spreading in Devon and Cornwall.

Henry Warren, 19, was taking pictures in fields when the creature leapt out in front of him.

The student managed to rattle off several frames before the animal disappeared into undergrowth and has since reported the incident to the Plymouth-based British Big Cat Society.

Britain's most famous big cat was first spotted in 1983 and there have been over 60 recorded sightings since. There have been sightings on Exmoor, Dartmoor and several other rural locations.

It was declared a phantom in 1995 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food but Henry thinks they're wrong.

A mysterious animal recorded on a residential security camera roaming a street in Norwalk on July 29 still has city officials scratching their heads wondering if they really do have what may be a lion living among them.
The creature has gained international attention attracting news agencies from as far as Japan that have contacted city officials wanting the scoop on the unidentifiable animal.
“It’s incredibly intriguing,” Norwalk Mayor Marcel Rodarte said. “We want to make sure someone isn’t keeping an illegal pet and that they know how dangerous it can be for the community.”

NEWSLINK: Monkeys use researchers 'as human shields' to avoid leopards and big cats in the wild

The samango monkeys of South Africa usually have a good reason not to stray too far from the forest. Although they spend much of their time loping through the trees they know to keep within a certain range: climb too high and they're targets for eagles, too low and they could be a big cat's lunch.

However, it seems there is an exception to this behaviour - and that’s when people are around. A new study from the journal of Behavioural Ecology reports that samango monkeys under observation by scientists use the researchers  as “human shields”, counting on their presence to avoid being picked off by a leopard.

Scientists found that when they set up feeding stations at different levels in the forests (some on the ground, some mid-way up trees, and others higher up) the monkeys not only ate more when they were being watched but they also favoured the ground-based stations, suggesting that they did not see humans as a reliable defence against airborne threats.

HILLSBORO, Ore -- Video captured by a KGW photographer shows what appears to be a cougar in a popular Hillsboro park late Tuesday.
That video was shot just before midnight, hours after another reported cougar sighting at Rood Bridge Park.
Officers responding to the first report did not find a cougar.
The park was closed for several hours while officials investigated overnight. They also said they will be posting warning signs.
After seeing the video, the city of Hillsboro has asked wildlife officials to help with the investigation.
