NEWSLINK: Next-door leopards: First GPS-collar study reveals how leopards live with people

In the first-ever GPS-based study of leopards in India, led by WCS and partners has delved into the secret lives of these big cats, and recorded their strategies to thrive in human-dominated areas.

The study concludes that leopards in human areas are not always 'stray' or 'conflict' animals but residents, potentially requiring policy makers to rethink India's leopard-management strategies.

The study was a collaboration of Vidya Athreya of WCS India (Wildlife Conservation Society), scientists from Norway (Morten Odden from Hedmark University College and John Linnell from Norwegian Institute for Nature Research), Sandeep Rattan of the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, Maharashtra Forest Department and Asian Nature Conservation Foundation. Their findings were published recently in the journal PLOS ONE in the article "Adaptable Neighbours: Movement patterns of GPS-collared leopards in human-dominated landscapes in India."

NEWSLINK-Big Cat Week Google+ Hangout: A Life Among Lions

Since the 1980s, National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence Dereck and Beverly Joubert have captured some of the most eye-opening and enlightening big cat footage in the world (see photos and get stories from throughout their career). Ever watched something about the long standing rivalry between lions and hyenas? That was them. Ever seen a water buffalo chase down lion cubs? Them again. Do you feel that there’s one particular leopard you know better than the rest? Her name is Lagadema, and you have the Jouberts to thank for that one too. Their dedication to recording and sharing the lives of Africa’s big cats is matched only by their dedication to protecting them. As co-founders of the National Geographic Big Cats Initiative, they’ve started one of the most successful and results-based conservation projects around. Now, as part of Big Cat Week on Nat Geo Wild you can meet the Jouberts online. On December 3 at 1pm ET, join Dereck, Beverly, and other big cat experts for a live video chat via Google+ Hangouts and ask your questions about watching, photographing, protecting, and living with big cats in the wild. NEWSLINK: Panther blamed for killing Bambi the deer

John Griffin and his neighbours said they were horrified to see Bambi’s corpse stripped to the bone.
There have been several sightings of a big cat in Sussex in recent weeks.

John, from Billingshurst, West Sussex, said: "The remains had been stripped of all flesh, and I don't know of any native predator that could do such a thorough job.

"The carcass was completely bare. I don't know what could've stripped it so quickly.

"My son's friend said he'd seen two animals run across the road in front of him that looked like wild cats, almost panther size."

NEWSLINK: France: Big cat on the prowl is not a tiger

MONTEVRAIN, France (AP) — A two-day search by police and military forces for a wild animal roaming through French towns has come to one conclusion: it isn't a tiger.

One theory is that it could be a lynx, an extinct cat that was reintroduced to France in the 1970s.

But the public and Disneyland Paris, the main tourist attraction in the area, didn't seem too concerned on Friday by what officials were calling a security threat.

In fact, if the search doesn't capture the animal soon, locals could begin seeing it less as an invader and more like a harmless Pepé Le Pew, the French skunk.

Officials who had identified the cat spotted near a grocery store in a Paris suburb on Thursday morning as a panther tigris are now ruling that out.

The wild cat caught in several fuzzy photographs in the town of Montevrain was spotted again on Friday, but it has eluded 200 police and military forces.

Residents of Montevrain and two other nearby towns were urged to stay indoors — but most people seemed to be taking the cat hunt in stride.

CANADIAN SIGHTINGS: Another cougar sighting reported near Cambridge

Waterloo Region Record
By Jeff Hicks

WATERLOO REGION — Jennifer Hammond says she was safe in her van last Wednesday as she pulled away from a stop sign at Valens Road and Concession 8, southeast of Cambridge.

In her high beams, she saw a cougar walking along the road, only a few feet away, as she headed to work for Canada Post around 5 a.m.

"At first, I thought it was a deer in my headlights," said the mother of two boys who delivers mail on suburban and rural routes. "As it got closer, I realized it was a big cat."

Hammond, who has lived on Valens Road for four years, was amazed and frightened at the same time — especially with African Lion Safari nearby. She was startled, even though she said locals once warned her to watch out for such wild animals in the area.

Hammond's report is the second unverified sighting of a suspected cougar beyond the southeast edges of Cambridge in the past seven weeks.

The sightings are about 11 kilometres apart.

Rob Ecob, a 65-year-old staff specialist for a local automation company, reported seeing a huge cat in the field behind the backyard of his Dundas Street South home in the late afternoon on Sept. 21. Neighbour Bill Murcar also saw it and called police. By the time officers arrived, the animal had moved off.

US SIGHTINGS: Mountain lion sightings reported

ST. GEORGE – Some residents around the bluffs in St. George in the area of 400 West and 670 North are being visited by a rather unusual family — a mountain lion and her two kittens.

The St. George Police Department received a report last week of the feline visitors after a man working on his vehicle turned to see a strange set of eyes staring at him — or three sets rather.

Ann Cluff has lived in the area for 40 years, and she said the last five years she has seen a larger amount of wildlife than usual.

“I had to cover my plants during the summer because of the deer but she (mountain lion) has finally chased them off,” Cluff said.

Cluff said she hasn’t seen the cat and her offspring except for tracks around the area.

“My neighbor’s daughter came home the other night, though, and saw her,” she said.

She and her neighbors have seen a lot of tracks since the flooding in September, which is when they really became aware of how often the big cat was visiting the area, Cluff said.

She believes the animals are being chased down by increased development around the area, leaving little space for them to move without coming into the neighborhoods.

NEWSLINK: Milwaukee Zoo reports death of jaguar cub

MILWAUKEE —The Milwaukee County Zoo said one of two baby jaguar cubs has died.

Anahish, born Aug. 14, was killed by another jaguar inside the Big Cat area of the zoo.

"It's a sad day today. We all feel it immensely," veterinarian Dr. Vickie Clyde said.

Zoo officials said an interior door was left open in the Big Cat holding area. A 2-year-old adult jaguar, Zean, entered the area where the cubs' mother, Stella, and the cubs were housed.

Officials said that Zean fatally injured the female cub.

"Those cats are not supposed to be in the same space together. It's only natural for a young male like that to attack something young, especially associated with a female he is very familiar with. It was his mother also,” zoo director Chuck Wickenhauser said.

Zoo personnel said a necropsy will be performed on Anahish. The cub's mother and brother appear agitated, and zoo officials will keep them out of the public exhibit at this time.

The jaguar that attacked is leaving Milwaukee for another zoo in a few weeks, but his departure was previously planned.

The zoo is investigating why the door was left open.

NEWSLINK: Cats disappearing in Aptos neighborhoods

APTOS, Calif. —Cats keep disappearing in the Aptos neighborhoods of Rio Del Mar and Seascape, and residents fear the culprit is one big cat.

Between August and October, a mountain lion was seen 10 times on the Seascape Golf Course' first, second, and sixth fairways, Sumner Avenue, Gay Road, Humes Avenue, Los Altos Drive, Loyola Drive, and Calypso Drive.

The cougar is frequently spotted walking with her cub at dawn and dusk. Residents expressed concern that the mother may have moved in for good.

Santa Cruz County Supervisor Zach Friend said the mountain lion has not been spotted this month, but plans are still in the works for posting mountain lion caution signs.

One of the most recent house cats that went missing was Foxy, a 6-year-old Angora who was last seen on Oct. 30. The tortie-fur feline had just moved into a house on Via Novella in Seascape two weeks ago. Her owner said Foxy is very smart - that's how she got her name- so her disappearance is perplexing.

Sadly, a "lost cat" poster for Foxy is one of many posted around town.

Mountain lions are native to California, and while they are solitary and elusive by nature, droughts drive them into areas populated by people.

NEWSLINK: Scientists Discover Genes That Helped Turn Fearsome Wildcats Into House Cats

Wildcats, like this Scottish wildcat, are almost identical to domesticated cats. Except they’re more likely to bite you in the ass than sit on your lap. Peter Trimming/Flickr Cats are different than other domesticated animals. Unlike other species tamed for either food or labor, cats specialized in becoming mooches. Sure they catch mice, but it’s not like they do it for our sake. Despite these differences, many scientists believe that cats, like all domesticated animals, inherited certain genetic mutations from ancestors who were unafraid of humans. A new study identifies some of the genes that may be responsible for the differences between house cats and their wild ancestors.

A tiger up closeA tiger up close Tigers, pumas, panthers … 'there is no more evidence for the existence of these animals in the wild than there is for the Loch Ness monster'. Photograph: Jenny Evans/EPA The helicopters were scrambled, the marksmen were mobilised; the police swept the woods and everyone was looking VERY STERN AND SERIOUS after the prints of a dog were found on a molehill. Un chien? Non, non, c’est vraiment un tigre. To which I say that the French authorities, who until a few hours ago were chasing a paper tiger into the woods near Paris, are as gullible as their counterparts in the UK. It’s not complicated. Tigers have retractable claws which are sheathed when they walk; the prints they were following have claw marks. They belong to a dog. Nor is the dog in question “an enormous coal-black hound” whose “muzzle and hackles and dewlap were outlined in flickering flame”, but a creature no larger than a cocker spaniel. It was probably on a lead. So far the army of police and firefighters deployed to find this beast have failed. A local official explained that the animal had probably been “snoring serenely somewhere” during the hunt. Too right it was. Perhaps in a basket at the foot of its owner’s bed, in a diamante collar with the phone number attached. This morning a new set of prints was found, made by a different dog. They showed, the French media reported, that the tiger was closing on Paris. Now the gendarmerie has at last admitted what seemed obvious from the beginning: there is no tiger. A tiger, at least, was original. In Britain, most of the big cats reported (three-quarters according to a survey by the author Merrily Harpur) are black, and generally, according to the 2,000 or more people who claim to have seen them every year, “glossy and muscular”. They turn up everywhere. Even London isn’t spared the phantom menace: there’s a Beast of Barnet, a Crystal Palace Puma, and a Sydenham Panther. The Essex lion, which caused a cat flap in 2012 very similar to the Parisian frénésie, was an exception to the glossy, black rule. These animals do not exist. A handful of animals have been released from captivity and caught again, in most cases almost immediately. None of them are black. The evidence that big cats leave in abundance wherever they live – pugmarks, hairs, dens, spraying points and scratching posts – is nowhere to be found. A five-week hunt by Royal Marines, a six-month government commission on Bodmin Moor, police helicopters, armed response teams and the mass deployment of the best tracking, attracting and sensing technologies known to humankind has uncovered nothing but moggies, dogs and foxes. The hundreds of amateurs who have devoted much of their lives to finding or trapping these beasts have so far caught just one-READ MORE-http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/nov/14/paris-tiger-big-cat-sightings-will-to-believe

Police, fire officials and a specially-trained hunting dog are searching for a big cat - believed to be a tiger - seen in a town outside Paris. A woman alerted officials after spotting the animal in a supermarket car park in Montevrain, east of the French capital. Officers armed with tranquiliser guns have been combing countryside outside the town, helped by a helicopter.

Residents of Montevrain and two other towns have been told to stay indoors.
As darkness fell, the Montevrain council said on its Facebook page that the search had been called off for the night but local schools would be secured by 08:00 on Friday.
During the day, children were kept in schools and collected by their parents by car.
It was unclear where the animal came from, though there is a big cat park near Montevrain.
The owner of the lntermarche supermarket in Montevrain said his wife had spotted the animal at about 08:30 (07:30 GMT).

"She didn't get out of the car and called me to say 'I think I saw a lynx'," he was quoted as saying. The woman took a photograph that appears to show a large cat.
The helicopter was equipped with a thermal detector to try to spot the animal in the undergrowth.
A wolf catcher with a specially trained dog was also part of the search team, authorities in Montevrain and Seine-et-Marne said.
Le Parisien newspaper said several local residents had sighted the animal.
Specialists said the animal's tracks were those of a young tiger. An official from the mayor's office said they had been able to trace the animal to the woodland by following its prints.
The Montevrain mayor's office dismissed the idea that the tiger could have escaped from a circus that was in the town until Saturday, Le Parisien reported.
EuroDisney, which operates nearby Disneyland Paris, said it kept no tigers.
