Yet another big cat was run over by a speeding train at the Budhni-Midghat section of the Railways in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh, just a few kilometres away from Bhopal.
With this, the number of tiger deaths in the state has risen to 35 since 2016, even as forest minister Gauri Shankar Shejwar had been overlooking recommendations of his own department to post wildlife experts to manage core habitats of the big cats.

Animal advocates have been working for years to free Tony, a Siberian-Bengal tiger who is being kept as an attraction at a truck stop in Grosse Tete, La. This week, they have renewed their efforts in the hope of seeing him finally moved to a sanctuary.
Controversy has been swirling around Tony for years over the conditions that he’s being kept in, and whether it’s legal for him to be there. His advocates have continued to argue that a truck stop, where he’s constantly surrounded by noise and diesel fumes, is no place for a tiger.

NEWSLINK: Maharashtra in India’s top four in tiger and leopard deaths
Maharashtra lost 291 leopards and 84 tigers between 2010 and 2017, with poachers killing 159, according to a study by the Wildlife Protection Survey of India (WPSI).
The study also says that six sloth bears were killed during the period.
Of the big cats that were killed, 134 were leopards and 25 were tigers, accounting for 42% of the deaths. There were 17 leopard deaths in 2017, with poachers responsible for seven deaths. There were 46 deaths in both 2016 and 2015. Four tigers died in 2017, one of them poached. Sixteen of them died in 2016 — the highest. Four tigers were poached in 2012 . WPSI’s report used data collected from annual reports of the state and central forest departments.

NEWSLINK: 40 big cats die in Madhya Pradesh in 14 months
Madhya Pradesh takes pride in calling itself a tiger state but with 40 tigers deaths reported from across the state in the past one year or so, it is fast assuming the tag of 'tiger killer' state. The latest deaths have been reported from the Bandhavgarh National Park where two tiger cubs succumbed to the deadly parvovirus on Sunday afternoon.
The two tiger cubs who succumbed to the deadly Parvovirus on Sunday were orphaned when their mother was electrocuted by poachers in Shahdol on January 19. The two along with their third sibling were rescued by the field staff of the Bandhavgarh national park and despite their best efforts the two could not be saved.

NEWSLINK: State’s help a 'must' to realise tiger reserve
Authorities of the forest department are busy preparing a detailed project report (DPR) in order to submit it to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) after getting approval from the State government and see that the Eturunagaram Wildlife Sanctuary is declared a tiger reserve.
However, they opine that their proposal may become a reality considering the vast tracts of the forest area, prey population and other factors, but it also needs an active political persuasion.
