The hunt for British Big Cats attracts far more newspaper column-inches than any other cryptozoological subject. There are so many of them now that we feel that they should be archived by us in some way, so we should have a go at publishing a regular round-up of the stories as they come in. LINK: Iriomote Oyamaneko – The Iriomote Great Mountain Cat
Translated from Mizuki Shigeru’s Mujyara
Iriomote Island in the Okinawa island chain is sometimes called the Galapagos Island of the East. When the Iriomote yamaneko (Iriomote mountain cat; 西表山猫) was discovered, it came as no surprise to the inhabitants. In fact, the islanders insisted there were two distinct species of feline predators on the island, the house pet-sized yamaneko and a great cat the size of a panther. Biologists deny the existence of any “great mountain cat,” even though islanders have several names for the beast.

SIGHTING: Is it a big cat... or a big hoax?
Another unusual sight in Linslade has reignited the controversial debate that a big cat is still roaming the area.
The remains of a deer were found up a tree on a horizontal branch that was about four feet from the ground beside the ‘old railway track’ south of the canal bridge across to Linslade.
The deer skeleton was originally discovered by Jessica Mark, 31, of North Street, Leighton, who said: “My partner and myself were out for a walk along the pathway when he noticed a strange smell so we backtracked a few steps, followed our noses, and there it was, the back half of a deer in a tree.”

SIGHTING: FAMILY FEAR MYSTERY ANIMAL KILLED THEIR CALVES
A farming family fear a large animal ate two of their young calves alive after a gruesome
incident on their Co Donegal farm.
The blooded remains of the one year old calves were found half-eaten on the farm outside Convoy, near Raphoe, yesterday morning.
The one year old animals, which would have been a considerable size, had a number of their ribs broken.
The family at the centre of the attack and animal welfare officers are baffled as to who or what killed the animals.
The attack will again raise suspicions that a large wild cat is still roaming the north-west after sighting in recent years.

SIGHTING: Australian "Black Cat as big as a fox" (Photo)
Big cat caught: The cat measures up to fully grown foxes after the shoot.
CARPENDEIT dairy farmer Ricky Bailey initially thought he had spotted a fox in his scope while out shooting a few months ago.
"It was 150-180 metres out. We had a look through the scope and it was a big cat. It was black and big and had no collars on it," he said.
Ricky was shooting on a Pirron Yallock dairy farm, west of Colac, and said he hadn't spotted a cat this large.
"It was the same as a full-grown fox but not quite as deep in the chest but just as long," he said. "When you held it up in the air by the base of its tail, its legs and head was hanging down on the ground. You see a lot of cats around dairies, but not that size."
He sent this picture of the dead cat to the Weekly Times after Pirron Yallock was named as an area where large cats had been sighted.

SIGHTINGS: Two more cougar sightings on North Shore
Two more North Shore residents have reported seeing mountain lions in the last week or so, in Highland Park and Northfield.
Still no confirmations, however.
“What we need are pictures,” Northfield Police spokeswoman Loren Boyes said Tuesday.
In an era when so many people tote around telephone cameras wherever they go, not one of the seven people who have seen something large and cattish has photographed what they reported seeing.
Confirmation through tracks remains a dead end, too. Friday evening, a resident of the 1100 block of Highland Park’s Lincoln Avenue reported seeing a large, tan, catlike animal in her backyard, but police could find no tracks or other evidence that it was there.

My Big Cat Diay: Clouded Leopards
I saw this this morning and thought it would be a good idea to post a little information on this lovely animal, I know we will not see one in the uk unless in a zoo or something, but they are rare.
This beautiful Asian cat, named for its spotted coat, is seldom seen in the wild, and its habits remain a bit mysterious. Clouded leopards roam the hunting grounds of Asia from the rain forests of Indonesia to the foothills of the Nepali Himalayas. Though little information is known about their population sizes, they are considered a vulnerable species.

Most cats are good climbers, but the cloude...
d leopard is near the top of its class. These big cats can even hang upside down beneath large branches, using their large paws and sharp claws to secure a good grip. Clouded leopards have short, powerful legs equipped with rotating rear ankles that allow them to safely downclimb in a headfirst posture—much like a common squirrel. Sharp eyesight helps them judge distances well, and the cats use their long tails to maintain balance.
Though clouded leopards are great climbers, scientists believe that they do most of their hunting on the ground, feasting on deer, pigs, monkeys, and smaller fare such as squirrels or birds. They are aided in their hunting by the largest canine teeth (proportionate to body size) of any wild cat.

NEWSLINK: Senator Kerry Introduces the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act
WASHINGTON, Sept. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Tigers, lions and communities across the country may soon receive critical protection U.S. Senator John Kerry (D-MA) today introduced S.3547, the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act, aimed at prohibiting private possession and breeding of captive big cats in the United States. The House version of the bill was introduced by U.S. Reps. Buck McKeon (R-CA) and Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) last March.
Kerry's action comes on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the Zanesville, Ohio animal massacre where the owner of a backyard collection of tigers, lions and other exotic wildlife, committed suicide after freeing the animals from their cages. Local police were forced to shoot and kill nearly 50 animals - 38 of them big cats - before they could enter populated areas.

I do think this is a good idea, but like the uk it could mean more exotic big cats are released into the wild and left to fend for themselves.

"Here we go again," I thought as I hung up the phone. Another private owner has eight tigers and can't afford to care for them anymore. "Where can we possibly put them this time?"
A week later a team of rescuers is on site, but not before countless hours of planning. Calls fly among sanctuaries to see who might have room. Someone else is lining up a vet team to tranquilize and perform an exam, acquiring permits and other paperwork to take the animals across state lines.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this has probably been true for decades. The late Jan Williams once told me that the problem with the Scottish Wildcat was that no-one actually knew what it was!
