ARTICLE: Will Africa’s Big Five become extinct in the wild?

A hundred years ago, our planet teemed with wildlife. Theodore Roosevelt saw it for himself, when shortly after leaving office as 26th President of the United States he explored Africa for months, collecting thousands of specimens for the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History. 

His expedition bagged hundreds of animals, shooting and stripping them of their hides and other body parts for salting and shipping to Washington, where they formed the basis of what is still today one of the world’s most comprehensive natural history collections.
