In an effort to step up its existing protections for big cats, China has announced plans to create a 5,600-square-mile nature reserve.
In the past, China has been criticized for not doing enough to protect its last remaining big cats from human encroachment, land clearing and poaching. Tigers, for instance, are particularly vulnerable to wildlife trafficking, fetching large sums of money on the black market.
