A Placerville woman out for a hike Monday instead wound up in a dangerous dance with a stalking mountain lion, according to San Miguel County Sheriff's Office reports.
Kyra Kopenstonksy was hiking the Coltrains Trail Monday afternoon, when she spotted the big cat and noticed it kept following her.

A friend she called in turn called 911, bringing Sheriff Bill Masters and six deputies out; two deputies later met up with her at the trailhead.
Kopenstonsky told them she was stalked for about 20 minutes. She used a tree branch to make herself look larger, then began singing to try to scare off the mountain lion.
It laid down and began grooming, but whenever she tried to back away, the cat would jump forward and crouch, according to the SMCSO. The cycle repeated itself a number of times, during which the lion would appear to wander off — but when she started stepping back again, the cat came at her from the side.
